Google Experimental: Keyboard Navigation For Search Results

Next up in our continuing look at the new features available via Google Experimental is the keyboard navigation experiment. The beta version of keyboard navigation adds GMail-like keyboard shortcuts to the Google Search results page.

When using the new shortcuts page you’ll see an arrow icon to left of the active result and you can scroll up and down through the results, as well as jump in and out of the search box and open links all without leaving the keyboard (screenshots after the jump).

The keyboard shortcut navigation options are summarized in the table below.

Unfortunately this feature isn’t as easy to get to as the Timeline and Maps tools with their operator shortcuts. In order to land on the keyboard beta page you’ll have to go through the Google Experimental page or append the param &esrch=BetaShortcuts to the end of your search URL.

So far I haven’t been able to locate one, but this seems like the perfect place for a new Google Search plugin for Firefox.

All that’s necessary is to take the existing Firefox Google Search tool and modify it so that it appends the above param to the URL. If you run across such a thing be sure to let us know.

The biggest downfall to the new shortcuts is that they don’t seem to follow the preference setting to open results in a new window. A quick glance at the code shows that the links carry a target=nw which means at least some of the page is aware of the new window setting. Unless someone can explain otherwise I would call that a bug.

Still, for keyboard junkies like myself, the new options are a godsend. Hopefully Google will sort out a way for the open command to respect the new window setting in the near future.

Google Experimental: Maps View Adds Geo Context To Searches

As part of Google’s recent and significant search overhaul, there’s a new Google Labs project that allows curious users to try out experimental Google Search features before they’re rolled out on the main search page. Google Experimental, as the new section is called, currently features four handy new ways to use the search engine.

The first feature we’ll explore is the new Timeline and Maps views. Timeline allows you see results on a timeline. Google extracts key dates for your search and displays them chronologically (screenshots after the jump).

Maps view does the same thing but plots significant places on Google maps.

Obviously both timeline and map views work best for searches related to things with either historical or location contexts such as people, companies, events and places.

If you find yourself using either of these features on a regular basis there’s some new search operators that allow you go directly to either view, just append view:timeline or view:map to the end of your search parameters.

Of the two I think the maps visualization will end up being the most interesting, especially as geodata continues to infiltrate the metadata structure of the web. For instance, this search maps results for the phrase Wired Magazine.

At the moment the results range from San Francisco (our home office) to 2005’s Wired NextFest in Chicago, neither of which are particularly astounding.

But imagine if Wired were to add some metadata in our posts that allowed Google to index the location each article was filed from — the results would be a global map index of Wired stories, which would be an interesting visual way to explore the site (or any other site with similar data).

Taking this idea a bit further you can combine the view:map operator with the site: operator to get a visual representation of all Wired stories that mention a specific location. In that link I’ve searched for all stories that mention a location and contain the search term “Firefox.”

Note that this also highlights some flaws in Google’s technology since a mention of the the fact that Firefox was once called Phoenix causes Google to associate that result with the city in Arizona. Clearly the Maps view has some kinks to work out.

Google hasn’t announced any formal plans for the new experimental search visualizations, but some kind of standardized geo format information in the sitemaps protocol strikes me a logical way to tell Google about location data relevant to each page of a site.

Searching Search Histories: Trends and Topix

Google Trends, a relatively new Google Labs product, received pretty good attention as search marketers discussed the advantages of gaining insight into broad search patterns. If you’ve never visited Google Trends, you ought to. It’s fairly addictive to look at different search trends and , even though Google warns that it is “based upon just a portion of our searches, and several approximations are used when computing your results,” it’s can be insightful at times (particularly when entrenched in keyword research).

With Google Trends you can also compare several terms at a time, limit the search dates or geogrpahical regions and peruse related Google News stories as well. For an idea of what kind of information you can discover, try looking at the Trends search results for Steve Irwin, the Animal Planet’s popular Crocodile Hunter whose recent death has made global news. In the example search, you’ll see that Google Trends gives a histogram that goes through about June of 2006.

Google Trend’s Histogram:

The Google Trends results page gives you news stories to the right of the histogram (marked in the timeline) beginning with a story from January 5th, 2004 and ending with a story from January 16th, 2006. Although it’s nice of Google to throw in the related news coverage, their news search function gives better results (approximately 7,550 Steve Irwin articles currently listed on the search results page today).

Notice, too, that below the histogram on the Trends search results page, Google paralells the search volume line with a news reference volume line. Below that, Google tells you that more searches are done for his name in Brisbane, Australia than any where else (which makes sense given Steve Irwin owned the Australian zoo near Brisbane). By clicking the “Regions” tab you can see Norway performs the second highest number of searches and that the United States is seventh on the list of regional popularity in the numbers of searches for Steve Irwin. Google also gives you the ability to perform simultaneous term searches. For example, you can search for Steve Irwin, crocodile hunter, and be given a graph with blue noting one term and red noting another. This Trends search gives you the knowledge that searchers in Australia look for Steve Irwin whilei folks in Maylasia and South Africa are more apt to search for crocodile hunter. However, remember that Google is showing you searches performed up to June of 2006. Steve Irwin’s tragic sting ray encounter just happened on September 4th.

Here’s where the latest news from Topix.net comes in handy.

With the recent redesign of the news site, they’ve added a really cool feature; a “click-o-gram” (their interactive histogram) that’s offers more up-to-date information than the Google Trends histogram. The data features results from today and goes back a year in time. Although you’re not really searching search trends, you are searching the news trends, making the insight very similar to Google Trends search insight, giving you a really good peek at what’s popular when on the Internet. If you don’t believe me, try various Trend searches on Google and notice how the news reference volume line often mimics the search volume line.

Searching on Topix.net for Steve Irwin gives a more complete and up-to-date picture of the current spike about the famous crocodile hunter in popularity and fills you in on the latest news.

As you can see, Topix.net lists about 119,000 articles beginning with a story released 21 minutes ago. Very neat, indeed. You can also select to show only blogs or news results if you care to focus the results. Searching on Steve Irwin, Crocodile Hunter here does not break the results into superimposed results of the two terms. Instead you’ll get results limited to those that include both terms.

They also mention in their own weblog coverage of the new interface that “for the true search geek, we’re giving you case sensitive search on those results – enabling searches for news about “IT” that were not previously possible.” Using their own example, a search for bush -Bush gives you results that limit the meaning to shrubs, not the President. That’s pretty neat! Ironically, today’s search reveals another Steve Irwin article since “the bush” is term often used to describe Australia. Trying that on Google Trends didn’t exactly work. Both searches (one for bush and one for Bush) led to the same results, citing President Bush articles.

Using Google Trends or Topix.net searches can be very useful for Search Marketers.

Use Google Trends to:

discover what geographic region searches more for a particular term
compare search popularity among five terms at a time
view how the popularity of a term has grown over a longer period of time than a year

Use Topix.net to:

look at the most recent, up-to-date popularity news trends for a particular term
have more control over case sensitive searches
more easily eliminate what you don’t want to see in the search results
visualize trends in news and/or blogs

Web-Based Operating Systems

Wikipedia defines Web Operating Systems (aka WebOS) as:

“A software platform that interacts with the user through a web browser and does not depend on any particular local operating system.”

Web operating systems are also commonly referred to as Web desktops:

„A web desktop or webtop is a network application system for integrating web applications into a web based work space. It is a virtual desktop on the web, running in a web browser as software. Web desktops often are characterized by an environment similar to that of Windows, Mac, or Linux, but are now considered to have much more functionality being dependent on the internet. Typical benefits include the ability to save work and settings over the internet rather than to the local desktop.“

However, there is a controversy among Internet experts and software developers on what should be considered a WebOS, since the term has been adopted in different contexts with different meanings. The first occurrence of the term “WebOS” is in the name of a computer research project started by University of California, Berkeley in 1996 (that is now continuing at Duke University), which describes it this way:

„WebOS provides basic operating systems services needed to build applications that are geographically distributed, highly available, incrementally scalable, and dynamically reconfiguring.“

Wikipedia also specifies that:

“Common to all uses, a Web operating system is distinct from Internet operating systems in that it is independent of the traditional individual computer operating system. [...] The term „Internet operating system“ becomes appropriate when a web platform includes functions pertinent to Internet media including wireless cards and other devices as well as web pages..”

In this mini-guide I will refer to WebOS as a virtual desktop on the web, accessible via a browser, with multiple integrated built-in applications that allow the user to easily manage and organize her data from any location.

For this purpose, I have reviewed for you the most interesting WebOS available nowadays by providing a detailed description of their features. You will find out that some of them have already reached a good level of implementation, while others are still at their early stages. While reviewing these services I have identified the following traits as comparison criteria for this list:

* Open API: the typology of Application Programming Interface that it uses

* Open-source: the possibility for users and developers to contribute to the enrichment of the WebOS by creating new applications and widgets

* Integrated apps: the applications that the WebOS features by default (which could be a text editor, an instant messenger, etc.)

* Audio-video Player: the availability of a media player within the WebOS

* Photo editing tool: the availability of a tool that allows the user to edit images

* E-mail client: the presence of an email client

* Instant Messaging: the availability of an integrated instant messenger

* Calendar: the existence of a calendar

* Collaboration – Conferencing tools: the presence of online collaboration tools (such as VoIP, web conferencing tools, etc.)

* Mini-Browser: the integration of a web browser

* File storage: the amount of space – if available – to store files online

* File sharing support: the support for file sharing with other users

* Desktop Search: the presence of a desktop search engine within the WebOS

* RSS feeds reader/aggregator: the availability of a RSS reader

* Widgets support: the support for widgets

* Games: the availability of games within the WebOS
